Marti welcomed us into her world, allowing us an intimate view of her and her family's journey with Tom. She spoke plainly and lovingly of what it was like to watch her husband slowly descend into a life with dementia - the unexpected, sometimes shocking hurts, horrors, and life-altering changes that she and her children faced. At the center was Tom - not understanding what was happening to him, losing his independence, sometimes angry, frequently frightened.
She painted a picture that my physical therapist brain recognized, but also showed me new ways to think of how we can provide support and care along the way to help patients with dementia be mobile, safe, and at "the top of their game" for as long as possible. She also reminded me that not just listening, but hearing, is the most important thing that all of us can do.
